In brief

Request options access in the IBKR Client Portal under Trading Permissions. The product, market and option level must fit the strategy. A submitted request is not an approval, and a market-data subscription does not grant trading permission.

  • Check product, market and strategy level separately.
  • Long Calls and Long Puts appear at Level 2.
  • Keep financial-profile information accurate.
  • IBKR does not publish guaranteed approval thresholds.

What to check before requesting permission

Start with the strategy you want to understand. Buying a Call requires different permissions from selling an uncovered Call. A higher level is not a learning target in itself. IBKR considers financial information, experience and investment objectives. Review income, assets, source of wealth and experience in Financial Profile without changing them to fit an application.

Interactive Brokers Ireland describes options and four permission levels. Your own legal entity, account type and available rights are shown in your account documents and portal. Our Interactive Brokers profile provides provider context, while the official portal controls your request.

Request IBKR options permission step by step

  1. Sign in to Client Portal. Open the user menu in the upper-right corner and choose Settings.
  2. Find Trading Permissions. Under Trading, review the permissions already granted to the account.
  3. Select product and market. Depending on the view, choose Request, Edit or Add/Edit. Permission is organized by product and country. Stock permission alone is not option permission.
  4. Choose an option level. The official level guide includes Long Calls and Long Puts at Level 2. Request the tier relevant to your intended strategy.
  5. Read and confirm. Review risk disclosures and the summary before submitting. Then check whether the request was actually approved.

What the four option levels include

Selected examples from IBKR’s official level guide
LevelExamples addedPractical point
1Covered Calls and Buy Writes. The matching holding or cover matters.
2Long Calls, Long Puts, Protective Puts and certain long spreads, plus Level 1.Purchased Calls and Puts appear here.
3Short Puts, short spreads and other combinations, plus lower levels.Seller duties and margin need separate attention.
4Uncovered short Calls and short straddles, plus lower levels.Losses can be very large for uncovered selling.

This is not the entire strategy list. The official level guide linked in the steps above gives the full allocation. Account type, margin and instrument conditions can limit an order even when the level matches.

When a request is refused or an order is blocked

IBKR says it evaluates the financial profile, experience and objectives and does not disclose product-specific eligibility criteria. The public documents therefore support no “safe” income figure, trade count or guaranteed waiting period. Check whether the profile is accurate, the right market was requested, the level covers the strategy and any disclosures remain unsigned.

An order may also fail because of insufficient funds or cover. Read the exact error. The Financial Profile guide shows where to review your details. For an unresolved account case, use official support with the error wording and product type.

Trading rights and market data answer different questions

Check the required feed and its current charge in Client Portal before subscribing. After approval, understand the option chain and exercise and assignment. Access is not evidence that every strategy suits an individual investor.
