Detailed Criteria Description

πŸ“‹

1. Regulation & Safety

Weight: 25%

We verify regulation by authorities such as BaFin, CySEC, FCA, and SEC. Key factors include deposit insurance, client fund segregation, and the broker's regulatory history. A BaFin-regulated broker with €100,000 deposit protection receives the highest score, while offshore-regulated providers score significantly lower.

πŸ’°

2. Fees & Costs

Weight: 20%

We analyze commissions per option contract, spreads, inactivity fees, currency conversion costs, and hidden fees. Example: Interactive Brokers charges from €1.00 per contract, DEGIRO from €0.75 β€” while traditional banks like Consorsbank charge €4.95+. Total costs including exchange fees are factored into the rating.

3. Trading Platform & Tools

Weight: 20%

We evaluate user-friendliness, charting tools, options chain display, risk management features, and mobile apps. We test the platform with real trades and assess order execution speed. Professional platforms like Trader Workstation (TWS) with Greeks display, options chains, and strategy builders receive top scores.

πŸ“Š

4. Product Range & Markets

Weight: 15%

We check available options markets: US options (CBOE, NYSE), European options (Eurex), and the number of tradable underlyings. It is also important whether real exchange-traded options or only options CFDs are offered. A broker with access to 150+ options markets worldwide (like Interactive Brokers) receives the highest score.

πŸŽ“

5. Education & Research

Weight: 10%

Availability of webinars, tutorials, market analysis, and educational materials specifically for options trading. Paper trading capabilities and demo accounts are also factored in. Brokers with comprehensive options academies, Greeks explanations, and interactive learning paths receive bonus points.

πŸ“ž

6. Customer Support

Weight: 5%

We test support across multiple channels: live chat, email, and phone. We evaluate response time, expertise, and availability in German. A broker with German-language support, <5 minute chat wait times, and competent options specialists receives 5/5 points.

πŸš€

7. Account Opening & User Experience

Weight: 5%

We evaluate the signup process, KYC verification, deposit methods, and time to first trade. A fully digital process with video identification, SEPA deposit, and trading within 24 hours receives the top score. Complicated processes with paper forms and long wait times result in deductions.

Our Testing Process

1

Account Opening

2

Deposit & Setup

We test various deposit methods (SEPA, credit card, instant), measure processing times, and set up the trading platform.

3

Live Trading

We execute at least 10 options trades: market orders, limit orders, various strategies (covered calls, spreads). We measure execution speed and slippage.

4

Analysis & Rating

All results are evaluated against our 7 criteria, weighted, and combined into the overall score. The rating is reviewed by at least 2 team members.

5

Regular Updates

We update our ratings at least quarterly and adjust scores when fees, regulation, or platform features change.

Independence & Transparency

BeInOptions is partly funded through affiliate commissions. These have no influence on our ratings. Brokers cannot buy or influence their ratings. Our editorial team works independently from sales. All tests are conducted with real money and real accounts. If we cannot recommend a broker, we say so clearly.

Calculation Formula

Total Score = (R Γ— 0.25) + (F Γ— 0.20) + (P Γ— 0.20) + (M Γ— 0.15) + (E Γ— 0.10) + (S Γ— 0.05) + (U Γ— 0.05)

R = Regulation & Safety (1–5)

F = Fees & Costs (1–5)

P = Platform & Tools (1–5)

M = Product Range & Markets (1–5)

E = Education & Research (1–5)

S = Customer Support (1–5)

U = User Experience (1–5)

Example: Interactive Brokers receives R=5, F=4.5, P=5, M=5, E=4, S=3.5, U=3.5 β†’ Total Score = (5Γ—0.25) + (4.5Γ—0.20) + (5Γ—0.20) + (5Γ—0.15) + (4Γ—0.10) + (3.5Γ—0.05) + (3.5Γ—0.05) = 4.70/5.0
